Performance Based Diploma (PBD)
What is PBD?
The Performance Based Diploma (PBD) is an alternative education program designed to help students earn their high school diploma while remaining in school. This program provides an individualized path to graduation, with a focus on mastering key academic subjects.
Students enrolled in the PBD program must demonstrate 80% proficiency in the curriculum set by the USD 305 Board of Education. The program includes performance standards in the following core subjects:
- Writing
- Reading
- Math
- Social Studies
Program Components
The PBD program consists of two main components:

Online Computer-Assisted Instruction
- Developed by E2020 Learning Systems
- Focuses on core subjects: English, Math, and Social Studies
- Students engage in interactive, self-paced lessons to master the curriculum

Off-Line Work
- Complements the online lessons by covering essential objectives not addressed in the online modules
- Varies by course and is designed to ensure students reach 80% mastery in all areas

Academic Focus:

- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Emphasis on developing higher-level cognitive skills.
- Real-Life Application: Projects that connect academic learning to real-world situations.
Vocational Focus:
- Career-Oriented Courses: Students explore courses that align with their career interests.
- Workplace Skills: Focus on building essential job skills, such as reliability, punctuality, and teamwork.
Counseling & Support:
- Self-Improvement: Focus on personal growth, including goal setting and decision making.
- Mentoring: Each student is paired with a mentor—an adult who serves as a positive role model and provides guidance throughout the program.

Who is Eligible for PBD?
The PBD program is designed for students who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Have struggled in the traditional high school setting
- Have insufficient credits toward high school graduation
- Have been retained one or more years, or are older than the typical age for their grade
- Have achievement test scores below the 30th percentile in language arts, reading, or math
